2010 MSBL/MABL Season Recap

The 18+ Summer season saw the same top 3 teams Padres, Dodgers and Blue Jays battle it out for the regular season title as the previous year. But it was the Padres who prevailed winning their second straight season title. With the competition among 9 teams as tough and strong as ever, the playoffs would show the equality of the League and why you never know what can happen. Although the first round of the playoffs followed what was scripted on paper with the top 4 seeds Padres, Dodgers, Blue Jays and Rockies advancing; the second round would be the real test of teams. In the first semi-final the Dodgers and Blue Jays continued the fierce low scoring, defensive battle. Dodger pitcher ace Nick Hedgecock controlling the game and picking up the win. Dodger John Cassanego’s two run single making the difference. The other semi-final pitted the top-seeded Padres vs. the Rockies who handed the Padres one of their two season losses. The Rockies taking a page from the Padres playbook used solid defense and pitching from Gary French to shut down the Padres. They used a barrage of hits throughout their lineup to keep the Padres off balance. Rockies Paul Crogan, Mike Koentopp and Scott Welch leading the way. In the Championship game the Rockies continued their hitting assault and battled with the Dodgers back and forth until finally shutting down the Dodgers offense in the final 3 innings. Rockies pitchers Jim Ewing and Paul Crogan coming in to shut things down. Dodger pitchers Charlie Zimmerman and Nick Hedgecock pitched well in the loss. Rockies win 7-6 for the championship.

The 35+ Season had solid battles throughout the season but the Cheney Tigers were all business as they took the regular season with a 9-1 record and were unstoppable in the 2010 35+ Championship tournament. In the semi-finals, the Spokane Rangers lefty Kevin Fenell threw well early with good movement on his pitches. However, costly errors and a combined one hitter from Tiger pitchers Kerry Pease and Dan Pitman produced the inevitable outcome. Kenny Eilmes propelled the Tigers with a 5 for 5 performance at the plate. The short-stop led the Cheney charge in a 12 -0 route. In the other semi-final, the Rathdrum Angels and Pirates squared off in their usual semi-final nail biter of a contest. Trading runs back and forth until the final innings with the Angels miscues on defense being the determining factor. In the Championship game Tiger pitcher Jim Ewing only allowed 1 run in his 5 inning start and Dan Pitman once again effectively closed the door. The Tiger team scored two in the first and second innings, one more in the third behind a solid hitting performance by Mike Lee. The Pirates answered in the fourth with a run, and looked poised to threaten when Kevin Hupp delivered the “nail in the coffin” with a two out, two RBI smash in the 5th to send the Tigers toward victory. Final count, Tigers 10, Pirates 2. Tigers win back to back championships.

The Fall Season had 2 teams the Padres and the Black Sox at the top of the standings with 1 loss between them when they met late in the season. After a split it was the Padres who captured their second straight regular season title. In the playoff semi finals the Padres faced the Vipers and one of their former pitchers. Viper pitcher Darrin Duty after giving up 1 run in the first settled in and threw a complete game 5 hitter and shut down the power hitting Padres lineup. The Vipers used key hits and a few miscues to take the game 5-1. In the other semi-final the Royals faced the Black Sox and outhit them early and often. Royals Pitcher Andrew Barlow had 11 k’s to seal the deal. Royals win 7-2. In the Championship game, back and forth early until the fourth. Royals pitcher Trever Harder only gives up 1 earned run to shut down the Vipers. Solid hitting by James Maguire 2-3, double and triple, and Josh Bertch 4-5, double and 2 triples set the tone. Royals win their first championship 7-2.
