Playoff Recap
Year of “Nobody Can Be Counted Out”
First Round Game #1:
#2 Seed Blue Jays vs. #7 Seed Royals
The game was a hard fought contest at Cheney. With some key base hits, close plays and solid defense the Royals pulled off the 5-3 upset. Ian Wolf led the way for the Royals with a 2 RBI double. Pitcher Andrew Bison was the winning pitcher.
First Round Game #2:
#3 Seed Dodgers vs. #6 Seed Rockies
The Rockies jumping out early and often were able to build a 9-2 lead going into the 7th. However it turned into gut check baseball time with the Dodgers “no quit” attitude, coming all the way back to tie the ball game at 9-9 in the bottom of the 7th with 5 runs coming with 2 outs. The Rockies put together some key hits in the top of the 10th to take the lead back at 13-9. The Dodgers picked up 1 in the bottom of the 10th to fall short of the repeat as Champions. Roger Coston pitched a strong 9 innings with no decision for the Dodgers and a combination of Brandon Bell (6 1/3 innings) and Evan Ewing (3 1/3 innings) got the win for the Rockies.
First Round Game #3:
#4 Seed Sox vs. #5 Seed Braves
A solid battle between middle seeds with great plays on both sides. Sox hold on to win 5-3 and advance with Tim Carlson contributing 4 RBI’s. Sox pitcher Ryan Newell gets the win with Justin Elliott picking up the save.
Semi-Finals Game #4 at Avista Stadium:
#7 Seed Royals vs. #6 Rockies
A pitcher’s duel between Royals James Edwards and Rockies Evan Ewing. Royals score 1 early, with both teams making great plays defensively. Royals pick up 2 more, but Rockies battle back to pick up 2 runs making it interesting. Royals win 3-2 with James Edwards picking up the win.
Semi-Finals Game #5 at Avista Stadium:
#1 Seed Padres vs. #4 Seed Sox
Padres defense plays solid robbing Sox time and again of hard hit base hits. Padres jump out early in the 1st with 4 runs. Speed and quickness continue throughout along with key RBI hits bringing the run total to 10 for the Padres. Padres pitcher Kyle Arnold throws a complete game 2 hit shutout and ended the season undefeated as a pitcher. The Sox played strong but were held in check. Final score 10-0.
Championship Game at Avista Stadium:
Padres vs. Royals
Padres match earlier game with stellar defense, quickness on the bases, solid hitting and another outstanding pitching performance. Pitcher Chris Dempsey throws a complete game 3 hit shutout. Padres score 6 in the bottom of the 1st and never look back. Padres defense continues to take away base hits and don’t allow the Royals to catch any momentum or rallies. Padres get 3 solo home runs in the 6th inning by the first 4 batters. Chad Hunt leading it off with Gary Jones and Mike Peterson going back to back one batter later. The Royals never quit and did all they could. Final score 12-0. Padres finish the season 18-0 and gain their first Championship.
